A grass like shrub that forms dense tufted clumps from which tall, 2ft-3ft, dark-green, unbranched stems arise. Dark brown sheaths at the joints drop off in summer leaving a dark band. In late summer the stems arch gracefully from the weight of small brown flower clusters. Will tolerate some morning sun, but avoid western exposure or reflected heat. Requires regular water becoming more frequent in extreme heat.
